The game
Farmer Wars is an upcoming indie first-person shooter published by PlayWay and developed by Ritual Interactive for the PC. It is set in a satirical, alternative-reality countryside that mimics the rural areas of the U.S. Midwest. The player takes on the role of a land-owning farmer who has to defend his land against hostile, feuding neighbors. But on top of that, it’s also necessary for the player to engage in a number of tasks typical to a life on the farm.
The gameplay is action-oriented, full of fast-paced combat. In order to protect the farm, the player uses a variety of both firearms (like handguns, shotguns, automatic rifles) and melee weapons (sickles, pitchforks, chainsaws), and faces waves of aggressive trespassers that would seize the land for their own. What’s more, shooting while riding tractors and other vehicles is another feature planned for combat mechanics. Plowshares into swords! (Or, well, better yet AKs - you get the idea.)
Weapons and ammo are expensive, and the farm gets damaged in all the fighting, so the player must also have an income. Defeating enemies and looting them for their equipment is not enough. Maintain the infrastructure, planting crops, harvesting them, and tending to livestock are just few of the ways the player can use the farm in order to secure funds. Money-making is also the foundation for the player to advance in the game by purchasing better defenses and becoming deadlier in combat.
A new spin
The developers of the game observe the popularity of farming as both a theme and mechanic of countless simulators, tycoons, crafting games, as well as many other genres. However, Farmer Wars is going to take on a unique angle with its balanced combination of economy and combat mechanics.
In the game’s lore and story, the farmers are hard-working people who feel a strong connection to the land that calls for so much of their hard work. But their ambition gets the better of them all the time; they want to expand by any means - raiding another player’s farm included - which is one of the main sources of conflict in the game.
Comedy is also an important theme in the game, as it satirizes farming simulators and the story comically exaggerates all the explosive, trigger-happy conflict that it depicts.
