Political RPG Esoteric Ebb launches on Steam
After several years of development, the role-playing adventure Esoteric Ebb by Swedish developer Christoffer Bodegård has now been released on PC via Steam. The game has been developed through the studio Sudden Snail with support from Science Park Skövde’s startup program for game developers, Sweden Game Startup.
Christoffer Bodegård studied Game Writing at the University of Skövde and graduated in 2017. After an earlier attempt to start a game studio with fellow students did not move forward, he spent several years working as a freelance developer before starting a new project.
The idea for Esoteric Ebb began taking shape in 2018, when Bodegård started developing a prototype for what would eventually become a political role-playing adventure. In early 2022 he began showcasing the project online, where it received strong feedback. Later that year he founded the studio Sudden Snail and joined the Sweden Game Startup program at Science Park Skövde.
“I love role-playing games and challenges. I came up with a game idea that I worked on for a few years. When I realised there was interest in the game, I applied to the startup program again. From my first round, I already knew what kind of support I could get, especially the network and the opportunities to pitch and receive feedback. Without the startup program, this would not have been possible,” says Christoffer Bodegård, founder of Sudden Snail.
PC Gamer coverage led to publisher deal
In 2023, a demo of Esoteric Ebb was released. The following year the game was featured by the magazine PC Gamer, which helped the game’s Steam wishlist grow from around 8,000 to 25,000 players in just one week. The attention also led to Swedish publisher Raw Fury joining the project.
In early March 2026, Esoteric Ebb was officially released on Steam for PC.
“It has taken a few years, but it feels fantastic that the game is finally out. It already has more than 2,000 reviews that are overwhelmingly positive. At the same time, I have not done everything myself. I have had great help from Anders Bach with the music and Oscar Westerberg with the illustrations. They are incredibly talented people who helped bring the game to life,” says Bodegård.
During development, Bodegård also received support from the local game development community in Skövde, including the studios Gibbet Games and Speldosa Interactive.
“Thanks to them, the game is as technically stable and visually polished as it is. Their help has been invaluable,” he says.
Esoteric Ebb will continue to evolve with updates. Depending on its commercial performance, the game may also be released on additional platforms and in more languages in the future.
At the same time, Bodegård is already planning his next project and considering starting pre-production on a new game.
“It’s not entirely decided what it will be yet, but I’m very excited about it,” he concludes.
