Gamers invited to join ‘Battle For The Habitats’ this Earth Day – A global games event to protect rainforests and oceans
The world’s gamers are mobilising to fight for the planet.
Today (Earth Day) marks the launch of Battle for the Habitats, a global games event from PlanetPlay (www.planetplay.com), the award-winning not-for-profit marketplace, that invites players everywhere to take part in an epic, two-month challenge to help protect the world’s rainforests and oceans – simply by playing their favourite games.
Running from Earth Day (April 22) to World Environment Day (June 5) as part of PlanetPlay’s ongoing ‘Make Green Moves’ campaign, Battle for the Habitats (BFTH) spans 100+ PC and mobile games, alongside major streamers and creators.
The goal is to raise $1 million for two leading environmental organisations: Rainforest Alliance and Oceana.
Choose Your Hero. Join the Battle.
At the heart of Battle for the Habitats is a simple team choice: Players visit the dedicated website (https://planetplay.com/gb/bfth) and pick a side from either Team Rainforest (with Cookie the endangered Cockatoo as its hero mascot) or Team Reef (with Dougie the endangered Dugong as its hero mascot). Their mission is to take on Big Chop, a larger-than-life villain threatening ecosystems across land and sea.
From there, it’s all about getting involved. Players can support Battle for the Habitats in 3 easy ways:
Buy & Play Games: Buy smash hit PC games with exclusive discounts on the PlanetPlay store, or play and purchase in-game content from participating mobile games – 100% of PlanetPlay’s net profits from sales will be directed to supporting the work of Rainforest Alliance and Oceana.
Donate: Players can also make a small donation of $5 to either Oceana or Rainforest Alliance through the BFTH website.
Amplify: Join a team, tell your friends, and watch participating BFTH streams to help spread the word! Every action is important.
A star-studded line-up of streamers, led by Team Captains Maximilian Dood (the world’s number #1 fighting game creator) and Briana White (the voice of Aerith in the Final Fantasy 7 remake), will showcase participating games, rally their communities and compete on a global leaderboard in the ‘Two Teams, One Planet’ fundraising showdown.
Throughout the campaign, players can follow their team’s progress on a digital mosaic, unlock rewards and even win prizes via the PlanetPlay store.

Powering Up the Planet with Play
Battle for the Habitats is just the latest evolution of PlanetPlay’s Make Green Moves (MGM), a pioneering, ongoing campaign that empowers studios to embed sustainability into their games through PC marketplace sales, live-ops activations and community events.
PlanetPlay’s global Play2Act research initiative, developed with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), has shown that 79% of players exposed to environmental content in games went on to make greener lifestyle choices.
Rhea Loucas, CEO of PlanetPlay, said: “Battle for the Habitats shows what’s possible when the global games community comes together with a shared purpose. By turning play into real-world impact, we’re empowering millions of players to support the protection of rainforests and oceans in a way that’s fun, accessible and meaningful. Together, we can help safeguard the habitats our planet depends on.”
Victoria Cordi, Director of Strategic Partnerships at Rainforest Alliance, said: “Earth Day is a reminder that environmental progress depends on participation at every level. Biodiversity loss and climate change are already affecting farmers and forest communities around the world. Partnerships like this help turn global energy into practical solutions on the ground, from restoring degraded landscapes to supporting sustainable livelihoods. When industries use their platforms to mobilise people at scale, the impact can be transformative, accelerating forest protection and strengthening livelihoods in the places that need it most.”
Jon Frank, Director, Global Corporate & Celebrity Partnerships at Oceana, said: “The oceans cover more than 70% of the globe and they are as important to us as they are vast. It’s wonderful to see the gaming community come together to protect our planet’s precious habitat. With their support, Oceana will continue campaigning – and winning – policy victories that will benefit the health of the oceans and the livelihoods of countless people around the world.”
